SMASHMASTERS 2009 DEMOLITION DERBY RULES AND REGULATIONS
The demolition derby is a spectator’s thrill attraction. In the interest of safety and sportsmanship, the promoter and /or operating facility sets up rules and regulations where this event is held. These rules govern the conditions of all events. The rules and regulations set forth herein are designed to provide for the orderly conduct of the events and to establish minimum acceptable requirements of such events. The publication and/or compliance with these rules and regulations, sets forth any expressed or implied warrants of safety. They are in no way a guarantee against injury or death to participants, spectators or others.
Event Rules
** Drivers or crewmembers not complying with any one of the following rules will be disqualified. All crewmembers are the responsibility of the driver**
1 - All work must be completed prior to arrival at the track.
2 - All drivers must attend drivers meeting prior to the event.
3 - Arguing, fighting, or un-sportsman-like behavior will not be tolerated and may lead to disqualification and prosecution.
4 - Any injuries must be reported to the officials immediately no matter how small they seem to be.
5 - DRUG AND ALCOHOL USE OR POSSESSION WILL NOT BE TOLERATED! Any drugs or alcohol found will be confiscated and not returned and may result in driver disqualification. Anyone found under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be disqualified and may be banned from any future events.
6 - No teamwork. No Sandbagging. No holding other cars. Offenders of these rules may be subject to a cumulative clock.
7 - No protests or arguing with the officials during the race. Doing so may, at the head official’s discretion, result in disqualification, forfeiting of any prize money, and immediate eviction from the grounds..
8 - Anyone who is unable to remove their car from the grounds must contact the head official to make other arrangements.
9 - All cars must pass tech inspection to be eligible to participate. All cars are subject to re-inspection at any time.
10 - If a car does not pass tech inspection or the driver is un-willing to make appropriate changes, there will be no refund of entry fee.
11 - Minimum ages for pit crew and drivers vary from track to track. Please call ahead for verification and to secure the proper forms if necessary.
12 - Judges decisions are final!
General Safety
1 - NO SMOKING ON THE TRACK AT ANY TIME!
2 - Drivers must wear DOT or Snell approved FULL FACE helmets with shields or other eye protection.
3 - A commercially produced neck roll or wedge neck collar is recommended. (REQUIRED in NJ and MUST be a commercially produced safety device and not a rolled towel or anything homemade.)
4 - Drivers are required to wear long pants and long sleeve shirts or coveralls. Fire suits and fire resistant gloves are highly recommended
5 - Vehicles must have factory or better lap belts in working condition. Shoulder belts/harnesses are recommended.
6 - A dry chemical fire extinguisher is allowed and recommended. It should be mounted securely inside the car within the drivers reach.
7 - Any vehicle deemed a safety hazard to themselves or others will be shut down at the discretion of the officials.

Car Rules
General
1 - Any Foreign or Domestic mass-produced 2 or 4 door hard top car or coil sprung station wagon is permitted. No Chrysler Imperials, Imperial type frames 1973 or older, or station wagons with leaf springs. No open roof cars. Minimum 105” wheelbase. (NJ LAW ON STATION WAGONS IS PENDING. CALL FIRST)
2 - No 4WD, Jeeps, Trucks, Blazers, Suburbans, Vans, Utilities, Flower Cars, or Carry-alls permitted.
3 - All cars must have an identifying number displayed on each side and the roof. The numbers must be large enough to be seen from announcers booth.
4 - No extra screws, nuts, bolts, welds, chain, wire, rope, glue, adhesive, or other fasteners may be used besides what is covered in these rules.
5 - NO REINFORCING ANYWHERE!! Please do not try it, you will be asked to leave. Cars are to be considered STOCK unless otherwise noted.
6 - JUST BECAUSE IT IS NOT MENTIONED IN THE RULES, IT DOES NOT MEAN YOU CAN DO IT. Call with questions.
Stripping
1 - All glass, plastic and chrome moldings must be removed. No broken windows in doors. No flammable materials such as carpets, upholstery, headliners or
sunvisors can be left in the car. Windshields may be replaced by heavy wire mesh and at least one bar from roof to cowl area (REQUIRED in NJ).
2 - The car must be clean and free of loose debris in the driver’s compartment and the trunk.
3 - Stock gas tank must be removed.
4 - All trailer/towing hitches must be removed.
5 - All airbags must be removed.
6 - Drain air conditioners. Rubber hoses must be cut or removed prior to arrival at the track.
Cages and Driver Protection
1 - SIDE TO SIDE BARS MAY BE USED DIRECTLY BEHIND THE DRIVER’S SEAT AND IN PLACE OF THE DASH. They must be a minimum size of 2” O.D. and a maximum of 4” O.D. They must be welded, with mounting plates not exceeding ¼” x 6” x 12”. They may be connected to each other on both sides of the car to form a “halo”. Up to 6” channel may be used for side bars, but they may not be more than 60” long. Seat bar must be minimum 12” from floor. Gussets may be used at joints, but no larger that 3”x3”x¼”
2 - Rollover protection is allowed and recommended. It must be attached to the bar behind the seat. It may travel straight up, across the top of the roof, and be bolted to the roof in two (2) places. Non posted cars can weld the vertical bars to the roof to create posts for driver safety. Roof bars may not travel front or back.
3 - A windshield bar or chain may be attached from the roof to the cowl area on the front windshield area only to protect the driver. Max of 2 allowed
4 - Driver’s door reinforcement is recommended and may be on the inside or outside of the car. This is not to extend more than 10” in front of and 10” behind the driver’s door seams. Inside padding is recommended for the driver’s door.
5 - Side impact protection chains may be used. They may consist of a single wrap of 3/8” or smaller chain around the frame and extend to the bottom of a window post or the roof. You will be allowed FOUR per car and they may not be used to sandwich the frame and body to create a new mount. Call with questions!!
Body and Frame
1 - Original mounts may be replaced by bolts no larger than ½”. Washers may not be larger than ¼” x 3” x 3”. No welding washers to car body or frame. Do not relocate or add extra body mounts. The radiator support mounts may extend through the hood as 2 hood mounts.
2 - Car bodies must have correct frames for the manufacturer. (ex. Ford to Ford, GM to GM, Mopar to Mopar)
3 - You may not re-weld any frame or body seams. No welding on frame except bumpers or bumper brackets.
4 - Rusted bodies and/or frames may be patched with correct thickness steel. Patches may overlap 1” onto solid metal. All patches are subject to a drill test at the discretion of the officials. This will consist of no more than 2 holes ½” in diameter per 6 inches of patch. “Over-patched” cars will not be allowed to compete.
5 - Notching and pre-bending will be allowed. Do not weld the notches back together.
6 – Wedging of trunk area will not be allowed. Trunklids may be cut or bent to tuck. Quarter panels must remain in a vertical position.
7 – Do not paint or undercoat frames inside or out. Do not grind or buff frames.

Doors
1 - All doors must be securely fastened shut. Any door that comes open during an event will result in disqualification. This includes tailgates on station wagons.
2 - Doors may be chained, welded, bolted, banded, or any combination of these. Any door opening during an event will result in disqualification.
3 - Welded doors may be closed with 3/8” thick rod or smaller, or 3” x ¼” metal straps or smaller. OUTSIDE SEAMS ONLY!!
4 - Call with any other questions.
Hood and Trunk
1 - Hood must have at least a 10” x 10” hole on each side of the air cleaner for fire personnel. Hood/trunk cutout bolts may be used. Max 12 per hood/trunk.
2 - Hood may be secured in 6 places with chains no greater than 3/8”, bolts no greater than ½” with 3” x 3” x ¼” washers, metal banding, or any combination.
3 - All hoods MUST be open on stock hinges or removed completely for inspection regardless of cutout size, please do not weld them shut.
4 - Trunk may be fastened in no more than 6 locations by welding, chains no greater than 3/8”, bolts no greater than ½” with 3” x 3” x ¼” washers, metal banding, or any combination. Trunk bolts, if used, must be sheet metal to sheet metal only. Do not bolt trunk lid through frame.
5 - If welded, no more than 6” at each spot. Welding may be done with 3/8” rod or smaller, or 3” x ¼” metal straps or smaller. Do not stack filler metal.
6 - All rear inner decking panels must be removed from station wagons. All body seams must be visible for inspection whether it is a used car that is bent or a fresh car that is pre-bent. If trunklids are welded or tucked, two 8” inspection holes must be cut for inspection.
7 - Cars with plastic inner fenders may remove inner fenders and weld a 3” x 3” x ¼” piece of steel to the fender for the purpose of securing the hood. OR, 3” x 3” x ¼” angle clips may be welded to the hood and fender and secured with 1 bolt per location. Call for clarification.
Bumpers
1- Bumpers, bumper shocks, and mounting brackets may be interchanged within reason. All bumpers and mounting assemblies must be from cars and remain stock appearing. All mounting brackets may be welded. Bumper shocks may be welded or bolted. Bumpers may be welded directly to the frame.
2 - Bumpers must be secured to the car body, 2 locations each, with chain or wire going through the bumper. If through the hood or trunk, counts as 2 tie downs.
3 - Bumper ends may be cut off or bent in. No sharp edges please. No welding bumpers to body.
4 – Tire pokers, extra bolts, and welding bumper skins together will not be allowed

Engines and Transmissions
1- Engine and transmission swapping between manufacturers is allowed. Do not strengthen frames or crossmembers with engine mounts.
2 - Transmission coolers and engine oil coolers are allowed. You must use high pressure lines and fittings. Gas line and hose clamps will be rejected.
3 - Some type of air cleaner must be used. No open carbs will be allowed.
4 - Exhaust may exit under the car or straight up through the hood, but DO NOT point it forward
5 - Radiators must remain in their stock location if used. They may also be replaced with a closed loop system.. No excessive use of hoses. No tanks.
6 - Metal engine driven fans must be removed. One plastic racing style fan or one electric fan with plastic blades will be allowed per car.
7 - Water only in cooling system. Please drain antifreeze prior to arrival at the track.
8 - Two batteries per car are allowed. Batteries must be mounted securely to the passenger side floorboard and covered with a rubber mat. We recommend metal frames bolted or welded to the floor or chains. Please do not use zip screws or rubber straps.
Suspension and Rears
1 - Any rear-end may be used provided it is from a car(5 lug or less). Rears may be locked. Rears may be chained, however suspension must still move.
2 - Suspension may be raised by using torsion adjustments, spring spacers or blocks. Front and rear suspension must have a minimum of 1” of travel up or down.
3 - Shocks must be operational. They may be clamped or stuffed with rags, but must still travel. Shocks and springs may be from cars only. NO TRUCK PARTS!
4 - You may use up to 7 leaf springs per side on factory leafed cars. They must each have factory step-downs. The main must be the top spring. The rear must be mounted on top of the main spring. No more than three replacement clamps will be allowed on each spring pack. They may not exceed ¼” x 2” x 5”.
5 - No suspension conversions except airbags to coil springs.
Gas Tanks and Gas
1 - ORIGINAL GAS TANKS MUST BE REMOVED COMPLETELY!!!
2 - Fuel cells or approved marine style tanks are required No gas cans. Tanks must have secure, leak-proof fittings.
3 - Tanks must be located behind the front seat and must be fastened to the floor with chains, bolts, or both.
4 - Tanks must be covered with a rubber mat, a metal cover, or both.
5 - You may run an electric fuel pump. It must have a kill switch that is clearly marked. Please use fittings or good hose clamps and make sure they are tight.
6 - No more than 8 gallons of gas allowed. If your tank measures greater than an 8 gallon capacity, you will not run (outside measurements).
7 - No methanol/alcohol type fuels or mixes will be allowed. (We have to be able to see if it is on fire.)
8 - **NJ SHOWS MUST ENCASE TANK OR CELL IN A METAL BOX BOLTED TO THE FLOOR WITH A FASTENED METAL LID. NO EXPOSED PUMPS INSIDE CAR. ANY FUEL LINE BESIDES METAL BRAIDED LINE MUST BE RUN UNDER CAR AND SECURELY FASTENED .**
Brakes and Steering
1 - A working hydraulic brake system is required. You must exhibit the ability to stop. Anyone losing their brakes during an event will be disqualified.
2 - Steering may be altered from the steering wheel to the steering box to avoid binding.
Tires and Rims
1 - No studded tires. No liquid or concrete filled tires. Any ply rating, foam filled, doubled, etc will be allowed.
2 - All wheel weights must be removed, including on the inside of the wheels.
3 - Valve stem guards are ok providing they are safely secured and do not reinforce your wheels. (officials’ discretion) No added steel otherwise.
Additional Comments
1 - Be prepared to have your vehicles inspected with a bore scope or other type of fiber optic camera, and to have vehicle re-inspected at any time.
2 - The intention of these rules is to try to keep all competitors on a level playing field. Build within the rules.
3 - The top 5 drivers in the main event will have the opportunity to inspect the winning cars with the officials at the end of the derby. Issues must be rule specific, not opinions or interpretations.
